The Eagles: A Biography

The Eagles are one of the most influential and successful American rock bands, formed in Los Angeles, California in 1971. The original line-up was Glenn Frey, Don Henley, Bernie Leadon and Randy Meisner. From the start the group created a unique sound marrying rock, country, folk, and well-arranged vocal harmonies. This distinctive musical style would help them become one of the defining bands of the 1970s.

The band earned early recognition with songs like “Take It Easy,” and memorable tracks such as “Desperado,” “Tequila Sunrise,” “Best of My Love,” “One of These Nights,” and “Lyin’ Eyes.” Their songwriting often focused on relationships, freedom, ambition, life on the road, and the changing culture of America. Those themes, along with great musicianship and tight harmonies, gave the Eagles a sound that appealed to a much wider audience than traditional rock.

As the band grew, it evolved its line-up. In the 1970s, guitarist Don Felder joined the group and later Joe Walsh added a more rock-oriented guitar sound. Randy Meisner was later replaced on bass by Timothy B. Schmit. The changes allowed the Eagles’ music to evolve while retaining the harmonies and songwriting that had become so integral to their identity.

In 1976, the release of Hotel California proved to be a career-defining moment. The album was a huge commercial and cultural success, including such hits as “Hotel California,” “New Kid in Town” and “Life in the Fast Lane.” The album’s title track became one of the best known classic rock songs and is still closely associated with the band’s musical legacy.

Internal tensions led to the Eagles splitting up in 1980 after several years of recording and touring. The members proceeded to embark on solo musical careers for more than a decade. The band got back together in 1994, releasing the live and studio album Hell Freezes Over and returning to major concert tours.

In 1998, the Eagles were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for their contribution to popular music. Their catalog has continued to reach new generations, while albums such as Their Greatest Hits (1971–1975) and Hotel California have remained among the most celebrated releases in American popular music.

Glenn Frey died in 2016, a major and emotional moment for the band. Despite that, the Eagles continued to perform in the years after, with a lineup of longtime members and other musicians.

The Eagles still define the sound of classic American rock more than five decades after their formation. Their memorable melodies, distinctive vocal harmonies, guitar arrangements and storytelling have had an enduring influence on popular music. From early country-rock recordings to internationally known classics, the Eagles’ musical legacy continues to connect longtime fans with new generations of listeners around the world.
